More diamonds are always a good thing, right? Well, no, not necessarily. It just depends where you set those diamonds.

Some jewelry designers have come up with the idea of putting diamonds into the prongs that hold your main center diamond. If you see this at a jewelry store, just turn around and walk out.

The prongs are very important because obviously they are used to secure the most valuable part of your ring, your main diamond. Well, in order to set small diamonds into the prongs, the jeweler has to drill multiple holes into the backside of your prongs, creating a space (or seating area) for the stones. This would be like drilling holes all over the foundation of your home, weakening the structure and making it unstable.

Yes it may look pretty, but essentially your jeweler is telling you something if he sells this type of design. Either they have never made a piece of jewelry and just don't know how precarious this can be for your diamond, or they just don't care about the integrity of your ring.

It is a simple fact, putting diamonds into your prongs greatly increases the likelihood that your diamond will be chronically loose or worse, will fall out and be lost.

Another area of your ring where it is not a very good idea to put diamonds is the side of your engagement ring or wedding band. When you put diamonds on the side of your engagement ring, and then you wear a wedding band next to it, the two rings, if not soldered together, will wear on each other as they move, eventually leading to the premature wear of the setting areas. If you insist on putting diamonds on the side, there are setting styles that are better than others, but I would still stay away from the idea, if it were me...

This blog is intended to help you make informed decisions when selecting a style for your engagement ring. Design without practicality is planned obsolescence.
